Immigration and deprivation are among the main factors causing public disenchantment with politicians and the government which has led to social unrest and rioting, Angela Rayner, the deputy prime minister, has warned.
According to an official summary of Tuesday’s meeting of the cabinet, Rayner, who is leading a wider government project on improving social cohesion, also highlighted the increasing amount of time people are spending alone and online as a reason for the disturbances.
Asked if Rayner saw increased migration as a particular reason for both the riots across England last summer, and recent disturbances at hotels housing asylum seekers, Downing Street said it was among “concerns that people have about whether government is acting on their behalf and acting in their interests”.
Ministers are concerned there could be a renewed wave of migration and race-based disturbances, as the anniversary approaches of the murder of three children at a dance class in Southport that led to riots last summer, with many encouraged by false far-right claims about the attack.
Rayner told ministerial colleagues that “economic insecurity, the rapid pace of de-industrialisation, immigration and the impacts on local communities and public services, technological change and the amount of time people were spending alone online, and declining trust in institutions was having a profound impact on society”, according to a No 10 readout of the cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning.
Emphasising the role of deprivation and poverty, Rayner said 17 of the 18 places around England that had the worst trouble last summer were among the country’s most deprived areas.
“While Britain was a successful multi-ethnic, multi-faith country, the government had to show it had a plan to address people’s concerns and provide opportunities for everyone to flourish,” Rayner added.
Asked about the role of immigration, Keir Starmer’s official spokesperson said “high levels of immigration over the last 10 years, including illegal immigration” was among a series of factors, including the cost of living and the pace of technological change that “have had an impact on our social fabric and social cohesion”.
Questioned about Rayner’s comments on people spending more time online and alone, the spokesperson said adults now averaged four hours of online time a day, “and that has changed the way in which people interact with other people”.
Rayner’s project on social cohesion is aimed at the longer term, with no date set for it to present any conclusions. Officially known as the plan for neighbourhoods, it is intended to invest £1.5bn in 75 areas over the next decade.
However, ministers are also mindful of the more immediate worry of a repeat of last summer’s disorder, after which there were more than 1,800 arrests and nearly 1,100 charges, with hundreds of people jailed.
One potential flashpoint could be an asylum hotel in Epping, Essex, which has been the target for a series of protests in recent days, and where police were attacked.
The far-right agitator known as Tommy Robinson has promised on social media to bring “thousands” of people to join a mass protest at the hotel on Sunday. Similar demonstrations have taken place at a hotel in Diss, Norfolk.
There are procedures for the prime minister to be kept informed even when he is away. Starmer cancelled his summer holiday last year because of the rioting. Officials have refused to comment on any contingency plans in place this year, saying they could not “get into speculation”.
There is an additional political impetus for ministers to take seriously the possibility of wider disorder given the likelihood it would be exploited by Nigel Farage, who used a speech about crime on Monday to say much of the UK was experiencing “nothing short of societal collapse”.

It is amazing people in office who show no political will at all to tackle both legal and illegal immigration write such stern articles as this.
This just adds to people losing faith.

This is a specific political technique. I'm sure it has a name, but I don't know what it is. It goes like this:
Step 1 - the public are talking about Topic A, on which I am weak.
Step 2 - an opinion piece or a speech "I hear people are concerned about Topic A; I'm concerned about Topic A as well, and Topic B; we must listen!" (where Topic B is a topic the speaker is stronger on)
Step 3 - "I've listened to all your concerns about Topics A and B, that's why... "
The result is you've successfully completely ignored Topic A but your base thinks you've addressed it. The hardliners on Topic A won't fall for it, but as long as enough people in the middle do, that's all that matters.

The major issue with immigration is your everyday person struggling to get by, having to work all their lives sometimes never getting a house and then seeing the system being exploited and taxpayer money just being given away to people not from this place. Tough pill to swallow.

I can relate to frustrations with the standard of living falling whilst housing costs skyrocket but think that's down much more to skyrocketing wealth inequality than it is immigration.
For example if all immigrants were deported tomorrow and immigration fell to zero would your wages shoot up whilst house prices fell to affordable levels?

There is an easy solution, take the incentive for illegal crossings away. These economic illegals are leaving a first world country to cross the channel and risk their lives.. why is that? Because we're a pathetic country that gives them accommodation, 3 meals a day, healthcare, phones, pocket money. It's absolutely absurd. France are more than happy with them living in camp slums, why aren't we? Labour talked about "smashing the gangs" - it's about as useful as America's war on drugs. It won't end because where there is opportunity there is always someone willing to step in and try and take advantage of it. Whilst there are illegals who want to cross the channel there will be a gang. And where we continue to portray ourselves as the land of milk and honey there will be willing illegals. It's not hard, totally gut the pathetic image we portray. We need to get a grip as a nation and get tough. Set up similar slum camps near the coast where illegals are detained indefinitely until they agree to leave. Basic water and food, no phones. Make them know that they're leaving the French slum to the exact same scenario. I guarantee that would reduce the number drastically but it won't happen because for some reason our politicians don't have a backbone.

No im fairly certain its the fact that the future of many peoples lives have been fucked over. Age of retirement being pushed up, wages stagnating, housing and living costs going up. People see nothing in the future and realise that nothing will change.
Immigration is a cheap and easy distraction.
freemason6999
But what if high immigration is pushing up housing costs and causing wages to stagnate. Surely you understand the concept of supply and demand.
New-Doctor9300
But what if high rent and housing costs were down to the fact that real estate companies and landlords are buying up all the properties to resell for an extortionate price?
DrIvoPingasnik
THAT'S what's causing UK public to lose faith in politicians?
That's it? Nobody cared about all the other things like rampant corruption, obstructing bureaucracy, gross incompetence, crumbling NHS, firing of thousands of police officers, austerity, cambridge analitica, defrauding millions in contracts for covid ppe, cuts to Royal Mail, mini fucking budget, stamp duty, housing crisis, allowing the energy companies to fleece people, cost of living crisis...
But immigration and deprivation crossed the line?
Get me the hell out of here, this country and its people are done.
Inverted_Goalkeeper
Extreme levels of immigration causes most the shit you listed lol. How are you even confused that immigration is simply the major pressing issue in the country at the moment. If it keeps going as it is, we will look exactly like Pakistan in 50 years. If you’re not concerned about that, then I don’t know what to say.
SpacevsGravityEngland
I'm Pakistani and I've seen more Pakistanis in Birmingham than in Pakistan but that's not even the point. How many taxi drivers or deliveroo riders does this country need?

If the government actually incentivized meeting house building targets we need and funded the actual processing of immigration claims, I'd bet a huge number of immigrants and refugees would go into construction, which would be better for them and better for the country.
But they don't, so they're stuck in fake app jobs because a) they legally can't do real jobs due to the administrative backlog and b) there aren't any real jobs for them.
Employ-Personal
It’s neither of these, the real reason is that the government has lost legitimacy with the British population, immigration and deprivation are symptoms of incompetent ministers, uncaring and selfish civil service and the fact that the ruling elite has absofuckinglutely no idea what the native population want and actively dislikes and is contemptuous of them.
Trick_Bus9133
The thing that is making people lose faith in politicians is that politicians are corrupt, self obsessed, power hungry sell outs that are happy to support GENOCIDE and kill disabled people as long as it means their mates (and in turn their pensions) have vast increases of wealth.

Things are spiralling out of control, and it seems conventional politics has us locked into a trajectory for collapse.
Feels more like a managed decline at this point.
Shame no lessons have been learnt from history. Silly humans
