The businesses should begin collecting cards prior to the beginning of the meal. Customers will still have option of paying cash, signing, adding tip at end but it would protect from this scenario.

That would hurt sales. Restaurants benefit from people impulse buying extra during the meal, such as more drinks or deserts and only seeing the price total at the end. If people had to pay up front there would be fewer impulse buys.

43% of small businesses can't pay the rent, Bloomberg reports.
For restaurants, 52% can't pay the rent.
That's the highest number since the depths of the lockdowns. And it's very odd considering "blockbuster" official statistics on GDP and unemployment.
@douglaskarr
I started my business at 40 years old and gave up at 55 outside of minor freelance side work and my online publication. The only consistent threat I faced in that 15 years was the government. Local, state, and federal gave tax breaks and grants to big business, but I got nothing no matter how I grew, supported charities, or how well I paid employees. The lockdowns finally put the last nail in its coffin when I was denied PPP with no explanation.
@PapaNewPro
We’re still a small business but were able to get a PPP loan, have it forgiven and qualified for the full $2mil EIDL loan. When we were just 11 employees (now 29) we were able to get $1mil in property tax abatements from our town and $200k from the IEDC. We probably wouldn’t be in business today without these things. It often feels the game is rigged. All that said our business hasn’t made much in the last 5 years. If we do it’s gobbled up by inflation, banks, taxes, etc. All my wealth generation has come from leveraging the business to grow my commercial real estate portfolio and investments in the stock market. I often refer to myself as the “l(fā)andlord” vs the CEO, as I do the CEO bit just to earn some rent money at the end of the day.

We need a new term I think. “Blind depression.”
When a developed economy could fix, but is in a depression because leaders behave as if it’s constantly wealthy, and distribute that information to its citizens.
@OffshoreHODL
This is FUD.
60% of restaurants fail in the first year and 80% fail in 5 years.
Have you ever met a chef? Or tried to manage a wait staff? Or met anyone who started a restaurant. That's why they fail.
@Jabippy
If you want to end up working as a dishwasher, start your own restaurant.
@tonyddpg
That's why they fail in the 1st through 5th year. That's not what is in question here. Apples and oranges. Liberals always twist facts to maintain their superior ignorance.
@TheRealHershe
43% of small businesses cannot pay rent, which is hard to digest on many levels. What is happening to the landlords? The banks? The consumers losing services? Dark times ahead
@Daniel21e15
For the last 50 years, the US GDP has been 70% consumer spending. Meaning, at least 20% is debt.
A lot of that debt went into many of these small businesses that wouldn't exist but for debt spending.
This scheme can only last so long. This is what the end of it looks like.
@All_Right_Now2
Now wait a second Peter, Biden's handlers keep telling us the economy is great. Surely your claims can't be true.
The huge increase in inflation isn't a problem either. It's all hunky dory.
@bestrategic2
Economic stats need to be reconsidered and modified. When government spending and hiring now has such a large impact on both GDP and unemployment, while generating inflation - calculating them as before and declaring how great they are makes no sense.
@aussie2361
My 39 year old landmark restaurant in Oregon was promised RRF for being FORCED to shut down. We got $0 from the gov. program. Upon opening everyone was wanting back pay, utilities insurance rent etc. Had to use 401k. And now prices high traffic low. Disaster.
@JohnHariza58511
Unemployment doesn’t help restaurants and small businesses. It is the opposite..Restaurants have been decimated by food inflation and wage inflation. Keeping staff from leaving to make a buck an hour more has driven up costs. They can’t raise prices anymore and keep customers
@e_considine
Blahahahahaha. So like in 3 months we'll see many empty restaurants or else you'll dexe your account?
@SonyaScauf
Yes. As a very small newspaper, I had to move to a very small office in a less desirable location to make rent. My costs have quadrupled over the past eight years between min wage, paper, delivery due to gas prices, insurance due to open drug laws, etc.
@DunkinSPE
The government has essentially handcuffed the “invisible hand” that flows goods and services to those who need them. The current level of incompetence in leadership magnifies the issues. Unchecked spending is just throwing fuel on the fire. It’s bad.

Many of the 'businesses' birthed during the post GFC zirp era can't tolerate the rates we have now, and I would like to know how many of them were around back during the stagflationary 70's era...probably not many, so none of these owners has ever lived through this.
@badgraphix
That makes sense to me. If everyone's already employed, employees are going to cost more to hire. And housing costs are really high now too. It's a recipe for certain sectors to really take a hit, and restaurants have always been a very risky biz with many running on thin margins
@peterheirman2

It's obvious what's happening. Government is growing larger. The private sector is shrinking. It's a planned transformation that started with the Obama/Biden administration.

@ChrisLangSocial
I woke up this morning to grab the deposit from the store and noticed that the door was open and our lock was broken.
My heart sank when I realized what had happened.
We were broken into. Again.
Our little retail shop on Main St. is a classic small business.
With every purchase, we donate meals to families in need.
Over 500,000.
We try to sponsor every request from our community, even if it's just a donation of goods.
While this will set us back with operations, online orders, and monetarily, we will move forward.
@UltraDane
Who do you think pays for their behavior? Them?
When the store has an item stolen which costs a dollar, they keep margins by raising prices. They raise prices, thugs do it again, prices go up again, and so and etc etc. The one dollar item now costs $1.20 and paying patrons go elsewhere to shop. Store gets robbed again... doors close forever and a new food ghetto is born.
@UltraDane
According to restaurant industry insiders, an old high school phenomena of "dine and dash" has resurfaced, but with a twist.
"An ever increasing number of patrons prearrange brawls, so the establishment has no choice but to "eat" the cost of the meals or risk being sued over fake charges. Things are so bad, many of the smaller stores were forced to close and move their lives and businesses elsewhere."
@CBray1959

Perspective on how brutal things still are for independent restaurants:
We process payments for thousands of small restaurants. Our data shows their business was down 75% at the start of the pandemic.
Since June it's been down 40% - 2x worse than the peak of the 2009 recession
@sg9377774
American small business owners fight to survive crippling dine-and-dash crime sprees every restaurant should operate like a bar. Give us your credit card up front, validate it, then serve. If they dash, charge them plus a nice tip.
@JohnnyUtahVan
open drug use and safety issues are playing a role too. It’s tough to keep a business open downtown when the Liberal government has a “catch and release” policy for repeat offenders. Rampant shoplifting with zero consequences
@Cernovich
Even setting aside real risk of harm…
Net margins on brick and mortar retailers is 10-20%.
One or two big heists and the small business owner can’t even afford to pay himself a salary.
Imagine having your entire years paycheck taken from you and then shitlibs laugh about it.
@_troyjohnson
Small indie restaurants are getting slaughtered. Business down 20-80 percent. I'm not anti-chain restaurant. But right now, if you have the means, pick a small place to support (chains can weather this). Order to-go food (most are doing curbside pickup). Buy a gift certificate.
@SarahSpelt
And Asian, especially Chinese, restaurants, are being particularly hard hit, because Americans are...silly. So if you have a non-chain Chinese restaurant near you that you support or have always wanted to try, now is an especially good time to continue or start that support.
@EmWantsCoffee

They all say the labor market is healthy because of "strong" immigration. Which is insane.
We need a new term I think. “Blind depression.”
When a developed economy could fix, but is in a depression because leaders behave as if it’s constantly wealthy, and distribute that information to its citizens.
But why don’t people know how great the economy is???
Devastating… meanwhile, Biden proposes higher taxes.
This is FUD.
60% of restaurants fail in the first year and 80% fail in 5 years.
Have you ever met a chef? Or tried to manage a wait staff? Or met anyone who started a restaurant. That's why they fail.

That's why they fail in the 1st through 5th year. That's not what is in question here. Apples and oranges. Liberals always twist facts to maintain their superior ignorance.
If you think Biden is the problem you’re not paying attention.

For the last 50 years, the US GDP has been 70% consumer spending. Meaning, at least 20% is debt.
A lot of that debt went into many of these small businesses that wouldn't exist but for debt spending.
This scheme can only last so long. This is what the end of it looks like.
Now wait a second Peter, Biden's handlers keep telling us the economy is great. Surely your claims can't be true.
The huge increase in inflation isn't a problem either. It's all hunky dory.
Economic stats need to be reconsidered and modified. When government spending and hiring now has such a large impact on both GDP and unemployment, while generating inflation - calculating them as before and declaring how great they are makes no sense.

Unemployment doesn’t help restaurants and small businesses. It is the opposite..Restaurants have been decimated by food inflation and wage inflation. Keeping staff from leaving to make a buck an hour more has driven up costs. They can’t raise prices anymore and keep customers

According to restaurant industry insiders, an old high school phenomena of "dine and dash" has resurfaced, but with a twist.

Small business economy is doomed. Corporations and fascism win. Our way of doing business needs a paradigm shift. I can imagine it, but feel doubtful that humans can make it happen.
My interior designer friend told me that 4 successful consignment shops she used have closed for good. One had been in business for 18 years.
Many small businesses are closing around here. We are seasonal and even if they are open this summer, they might not make it through the winter
Wrong. All bailout money is NOT "exhausted."
It's just been given to the non-needy.
Far too much wealth is in far too few hands. Even a modest redistribution would make a huge difference.
It's truly tragic & completely unnecessary. The level of government pressure to submit is growing.
Worst part is that they KNEW this would happen. The New York Times said it would happen back in March, even as they went on pushing the policies that would lead to it.
And yet, sext big businesses are getting bigger and fatter.
Also sext small businesses are racking it in as well, particularly those that cater to whimsical spending from recipients of more free cash than they’ve ever received before.
That’s because Big Businesses got most of the money our Government doesn’t care if you are small all they do is take care of their Buddy
If only the Republicans would return the taxpayers’ money to the taxpayers, they’d spend it and keep these businesses and the economy alive.
I agree this is sad. But what is more sad it was/is avoidable. I refuse to shop at any business that doesn't support mask 100%, and many small biz did not. If we had all embraced the science, we would be back to normal. 、
Yeah but there's this woke virus that doesn't attack people protesting racism or burning Bibles so it's probably extra angry at small business owners
On Tuesday I went into a small business. The owner told me that his neighborhood has lost 12 businesses.
Economic suicide was never the right response to this virus.
Exactly. What is the use of arguing over a payroll tax cut when there is not a "payroll" to return to or even get on?
We cannot continue to keep going like this in society, pedophile president is not reelected and it was due to corruption,....”I could for see a revolution.”America has never had com...st of values and will not be a com...st country.
Maybe the my should’ve made better financial choices and saved up for a rainy day like rich people did.
So do you support a full reopening of the country?
I have an idea Dan . Maybe you can give small business a break from your merchant service fees! You know, the fees you hit small businesses for the "Luxury" of using debit & credit cards. Explain to everyone here how you make millions off the backs of small business.
Yup. Somewhat new entrepreneur here, September would make my 3rd year in business. Will have to close before that anniversary. Applied for small business relief ASAP, never received any help or even an answer of approval/rejection.
