I have been trying for years to finally get a chance to ride a bicycle that was once the most popular in the world, but has proven exceedingly rare where I live. And why do I want to ride the iconic Flying Pigeon? Because it just may hold a key to the future of China's cities.

I was filming a Rock and Roll tour in China in 1986. One of our crew bought one of these black “British” bikes and shipped it from city to city.
I got to ride it for a few days in Guanshou (Canton).
What a blast! The bike was very low quality, made with soft steel. But joining thousands of Chinese in the bike pack was priceless!
The most interesting sight was at the concert venue. Outside were parked at least 10,000 black bikes. If you’ve ever forgotten where you parked at the shopping mall, imagine if every car were the same make, model, and color!

This was interesting, as I (an American) was briefly a student in Tianjin in 1981. Most of us in our group bought these bikes and sold them when we left. It was THE way of blending in and seeing the city when we had free time. Bikes were king then. As to quality, all I can say is that the cotter pins on my new bike sheared off not long after I bought it. I think the material used was some alloy of steel and cheese.

I rode a flying pigeon once when I was in Beijing, heavy and slow, so I bought the cheap $50.00 mountainbike most people were riding at the time, and it got the job done. When it inevitably had a hiccup, the roadside kiosk bike repair person fixed it in a jiffy and cheap.

I acquired a Flying Pigeon with rod brakes on a visit to Minneapolis in 2012, and it’s now in storage in Manitoba. It was one of those things I was excited to acquire as a novelty, but then never really figured out what to do with.
I can absolutely corroborate that experience of ‘soft braking’, but I also just love the aesthetic of those mechanical Rod brakes.

Wow, this brings back vivid memories of cycling around Beijing in the 1980s on a borrowed Flying Pigeon while studying there.
The sheer number of bikes and the near-total absence of private cars were striking, but the strangest thing was the TOTAL lack of batteries to power the lights.
As evening fell, you’d arrive at a busy intersection in near darkness, guided only by the urgent sound of countless bicycle bells. Collisions were common, but with such low speeds, damage was fortunately minimal. We’d simply untangle ourselves, and since all the bikes looked the same, most would be back on their way in no time.
That said, Westerners were a rare sight in China back then, and even fewer had the opportunity to cycle around the capital. Finding my bike was easy—I just looked for the tallest saddle, being over a foot taller than most locals. But if I was spotted untangling myself from the melee of bikes and bodies, the initial shock often turned into delighted curiosity, and I’d soon find myself waylaid for an impromptu English practice session.
Such innocent times—with many rides becoming an unexpected social event or adventure!

I saw an old bike in China that had a foot brake in front of the right hand pedal. I was told it was so traders could hold the bike still and leave both hands free.

Flying pigeon still makes a version of that original bike plus other newer models. easy to buy here online although these days a lot of new cyclists either are road cyclists or use share bikes in China. if you visit, it is really the best way to go around Chinese cities

I had a step through Flying Pigeon over ten years ago in nyc. It was a lot of fun. I bought it cheap as a local pick up only on eBay - some young woman’s father bought it for her, but it was too much bike for her. Perfect for cruising to the beach and held up well on trails. I wound up selling it to make rent on Craigslist to an advertising production house; they wanted it for an Uber Eats commercial. It still pains me that this bike is most likely sitting, unridden, in a production warehouse in NJ somewhere…

Oh wow, that brings back memories! Working in the Sahel in the mid-1980s, the flying pigeon was a farmer’s workhorse for moving their harvest to market, everywhere from Mali to Uganda. I even recall a Flying Pigeon ‘showroom’ , pristine in Bouar, CAR. A double crossbar model, new, cost 90 000 CFA (180 UK pounds). I remember rod brakes too!

I never knew this type of bike had a name but I've ridden one twice while travelling in Vietnam... In the town of Hoi An many hotels and homestays will have a bunch of these bikes.. or something similar to rent out.. I guess it's not a flying pigeon unless it says it on it.. but they were single speed, same brake levers, similar type of light on the front, a great stand slid under the back wheels and it was really heavy and looked about 30-40yrs old... but with all that it was still one of the most enjoyable biycles I've ridden and I created many great memories in Hoi An on it!

Thank you for this. I visited the port of Qingdao in 1988 with the Navy, and was surprised at how few bicycles I saw on their really broad roadways - I'd really expected to see more. Incidentally, the #2 bestseller: Honda Cub & variants, 100 million +.

Interesting that they used 'The All Steel Bicycle' on the frx which was a slogan used by Raleigh in the post war period. Also thebasic Raleigh was usually black and the premium Superbe models were green. Clearly taken more than just a nod from a western manufacturer back then too. I must say as an owner of several pre and post war Raleighs that despite owning modern bikes which are lighter and more gear ratios I feel much more comfortable commuting on a shabby 1957 Raleigh Superbe as the thieves don't seem as interested. They aren't fast but not as slow as people think either. They are very comfortable. I leave the rod brakes ones at home if there is any chance of rain. The chrome rims are terrible in snow as you noted. Got caught out once and it was a steep learning curve. In the rain you can mitigate a lot of the scary stopping, or lack of, by priming the brakes before you need them removing the rain. Rod brakes not recommended for stop start cold wet commuting for sure. Perfectly adequate and low maintenance in hotter parts of the world though - no need to replace cables etc. Great episode as usual. Thank you. A three speed roadster is woefully underappreciated as a perfect commuter bike in modern age but they are much better suited to our cities than most other bikes. Low maintenance, hardy and can carry great loads.

Great video! I saw a lot of these bikes in 2011 in China in the city of TianJin (next major city below Beijing). The 2 cool things about cycling in Tianjin was that on major roads, the bicycle lane was 2 car lanes wide in both directions, so excellent city planning Tianjin! And it was full cyclists. Outside of rush hour it was full of people aged 60+ cycling, it was a beautiful thing to see. There was also paved parks every few blocks. So people did group Tai Chi exercise in the morning, cycled during the day, and then group line dancing at night; basically every day. Great example for the rest of the world!

I grew up my first 10 years in China, and remember my family owned one, but I was too short. I remember seeing a lot of kids in the neighborhood riding their adult bikes by stepping one leg through the triangle frx and pedaling through it, because they weren't tall enough. I thought that's how bikes were all ridden at the time.

What a time for you to make a video about these classic roadsters! I just became obsessed with these classic bicycles; I'm even preparing to buy all the pieces for one and build it myself in the next week! (frx, standard axle, 28 in wheels, rod brakes, the north road handlebars) after exploring some bike shops in my city and finding out that they're pretty, pretty cheap. Although the one I'm building is a double tube (I'd prefer a single tube like the pigeon but they seem to not be available in my city, at least not at the same price if they are). Researching the story of these bikes, it seems they're really common not only in china but in all of Asia, specially India and Pakistan, Africa (where they're known as black mambas) and Latin America (I'm from Mexico). Specifically talking about Latin America, they're known as tourism bicycles or baker's bicycles. Sadly, Mexico has become auto dependent in the last decades. My city had in the 60s and 70s almost 20% of all travels in its roads made by bicycle, every grandpa knows these utilitarian double tube bicycles, and all our parents saw our grandfathers ride one of these at least once. Today, is 5%. Traffic has become unwieldy, with 9km long travels taking upwards of 50 minutes in rush hour, yes, I can go faster than that on these single speed, 25 kg double tube steel behemoths in a lightly steep hill. We have the most dangerous roads in the country, the worst pollution and the desperately needed new subway lines got suspended after the incompetent government ran out of money. I hope we can follow the example of China and Europe, and make these beautiful bicycles a common sighting in our streets again.

This brings back memories. I visited Beijing in 1988. The bike culture was amazing. Not only the Pidgeon bike, but large cargo bikes with single speed chain drives and entire families on a trike. 20 years later I saw footage of a much more modernized Beijing and conventional bikes seemed like they were forgotten. It's nice to see a resurgence of their cycling culture.

I was in China in the middle 90’s. The main bike in Shanghai was the “Forever” bike. Very similar to the Flying Pigeon. I even went to the factory. It was included in the book Life and Death in Shanghai. Remarkable was the width of the staircases! They could move thousands of people into the factory. They seemed 20 feet wide.

Very interesting, with many similarities with the Dutch Omafiets. The main differences being that the Omafiets typically had a single coaster brake and a fabric chain enclosure/guard.

Great video thanks. I live in a provincial capital in China, and although I own a car, I only do about 1500 km driving each year. maybe less. I ride a bike whenever I can, and only use the car when I have to. If I am with my wife and we need to go downtown, we use public transit, the metro services and buses are good here.
In China, not only is congestion a problem, but actually parking can be a nightmare too. Really I just cannot be bothered with the stress.
It is nice to hear that some cities are splitting bike lanes by speed of vehicle. Because the biggest danger on a push bike, is getting hit by a thoughtless ebike rider.
