On December 31, 2024, a shocking act of violence took place at the 18th Street subway Station in Manhattan, New York City. A 45-year-old man was waiting on a subway platform when he was suddenly pushed off the tracks by an unknown man. Surveillance video shows the man was looking down at his phone when he was suddenly pushed from behind by a man. Fortunately, the train stopped in time and the victim was rushed to Bellevue Hospital. The victim suffered head injuries but is in stable condition.

After the incident, police quickly launched a manhunt, and the suspect, Kamal Hawkins, was arrested less than an hour later. Police investigating Hawkins, 23, of Brooklyn, found that the attack may have been random and that the suspect had no relationship to the victim. He has been charged with attempted murder and wounding. Police say the incident was a simple act of violence without any prior words or provocation.

The incident caused panic and concern among the general public. Many riders said they were disturbed by continuing safety problems in the New York City subway system, especially the unprovoked attacks. Although the mayor of New York has said that subway crime is down in 2024, the public's sense of safety has not significantly improved. The quick handling of the incident also shows the importance of surveillance technology, with video helping police quickly target suspects and make arrests.

The incident highlighted the safety hazards in the city's public transportation system and reminded the government and citizens that despite the drop in crime, keeping citizens safe still requires sustained efforts and attention.

Been like that for years. But now people are too absorbed with their phones to even notice any danger till it’s too late. Like the man on the edge of the platform looking at his phone. Totally oblivious to his surroundings. And he is a New Yorker ? Smh. Sheer stupidity.

America needs to add subway barriers like they have in Asian countries. Every time I go to the rail station, my head is on a swivel because I'm so paranoid about these lunatics.

I think this would be a wonderful opportunity to pause for a moment and give thanks for the great contributions of the black community to our society. Their peaceful and generous nature makes them ideal neighbors, lending testimony to their exceptional family values and parenting skills unrivaled by any other culture. Their child-rearing practices are second to none. Their commitment to academic excellence enriches our schools and serves as an example to all who hope to achieve prominence as a people. Real estate values are fueled by the mix of African-Americans into an area due to their caring and respectful nature of these communities, an example of all they have achieved through their enthusiasm for self-improvement, hard work and a self-reliant nature. Without their industrious and creative drive, we would be poorer as a nation.
Let me guess.... criminal record, recently released, not the first assault, etc. Typical. He'll be released next week to enjoy the new year with his family.
Why are they getting released so much ?
@satyam168 they passed a new bail reform. In other words, you don't need to pay bail to be set free, and serious charges were lowered. Like this attempted murder may be lowered to a misdemeanor assault.

Can people stop committing train-centered crimes?
It’s embarrassing to say that I am a native New Yorker and unfortunately I am not proud to be from New York City! Such a disgusting disgrace to live here.
There are 472 subway stations in New York. Fare evasion cost the city $700 million. You could hire 4 police officers per station to watch the gate and patrol and it would pay for itself.
It’s the usual suspects like always.
WTF is going on in America?
RANDOM is actually worse than targeted.
Must put that bad guy in jail for 20 years.
A black guy. What a shock.
He should be in prison for life to make sure he doesn’t hurt another person again.
He’ll be out of prison in 2 years guaranteed.
The entire subway needs a turnstile system!!!!! How is this so difficult?! I’m not even from New York and it was immediately apparent that the crime is coming from those that skip paying the fare! Figured this out in one weekend. A turnstile system will prevent fare skippers. 2 cops should be placed at each turnstile, preferably 3-4 or a private security firm like Securitas. Just to be clear, when I say turnstile system, I’m talking full-blown floor-to-ceiling rotating turnstile. Not this lapbar nonsense.
How awful, for no reason he just pushes him in front of a train. Sick.
New York will never be safe, are you kidding.
Don’t worry, New Yorkers! Governor said the subways are completely safe....
