Doesn't start with drugs or alcohol, it starts with low wages then ounce on streets they become subjected to drugs & alcohol. Simple problem is low end wages are severely stagnant.

I understand that there is a drug/alcohol problem! But the cost of housing, food, clothes... to live is so expensive that good people end up going homeless because of the economy. Makes me mad when I heard doctors, lawyers, etc. people who don't have to worry about their bills and how to pay them talk about the tons of money that gets pushed at this but never reaches the problem.

People are being allowed to not take responsibility for anything: food, housing, family, self, etc. They can go do as much drugs and alcohol as they please and are given money to do so.

This is not true. Homelessness is not always because of drugs and alcohol. Homelessness can simply be a problem of not having social supports. It's probably much more commonly drugs and alcohol but not always. Just as all of these people are admitting, homelessness is also a very financial problem. You do not have to be on drugs or alcohol to be homeless.

Many street homeless die alone quietly abandoned by everybody. What's even more sad is their bodies get eaten by other homeless and stray animals and disappear in that darkness. I worry.

These people who are homeless don’t want to help themselves. Alcohol and drugs are more important than life itself. As a nation we push these vices and then we ask ourselves, what’s wrong? Really?

While I agree that the majority of the homeless problem can be traced at its heart to drug and alcohol abuse, and yet you conclude by saying that "39% more families with children" are experiencing homelessness (a statistic that shocked me), which is obviously another issue from the run-of-the-mill homeless problem. Yet you don't even touch on why that is? This is a horrible statistic and shouldn't be happening, in this case it is clear that it is not a drug and alcohol problem, it is the rising costs of rents and housing by greedy and unscrupulous companies. Government really needs to pass a law that prohibits companies from owning residential homes or rental properties, and rent must be fixed as long as wages are not going up.

This major has no idea what he is talking about. It's a cost of living problem created by the government. Always blaming drugs problem. It's the lazy way out. This homeless problems will continue until they address the cost of living issues. Homeless has increased all over America not just California.

Wages aren't rising enough. Everything else skyrocketed. They say "we aren't building enough apartments and housing". Yet the only apartments for rent are all these condo fake luxury apartments that all cost 1,400 for a studio! WHO in their right mind is shocked at the homeless numbers rising?

I can guarantee you those numbers are grossly understated. Over half of homeless over the past couple of decades, at least, are the Hidden Homeless - working poor and job hunters living in their cars, couch-surfing, etc. Nobody pays any attention to those who simply need to find jobs again, or better paying jobs, so they can afford to rent a room or efficiency apt at today's grotesquely inflated rents. El Cajon Mayor is totally off-base, totally ignores the biggest issue in homelessness. Help them before they fall into total despair.
